Damn... I'm bummed.

Yesterday, I got news from my friend Mark that a good friend of ours passed away. Nick Shepherd passed away in his sleep this past Sunday, January 15th. We both worked with Nick at Google... those were some good days...

I first "met" Nick as a co-worker at Amgen. I started working at the ASF office in South City and Nick worked at the Thousand Oaks ATO office. We spoke and collaborated several times over the phone, VC and chat about AV issues and just shootin' the shit. Even though didn't work with him face to face, I took it that he was a capable technician and that I could go to him if I had any questions. Later when I left Amgen, I got the pleasure to work side by side with him at Google as our manager, who had worked at Amgen, poached us to build the team at Google. (he also poached Pickles)

Anyways, our work lives spilled over into after work social lives. We would occasionally hang out at his house, our house or at a local establishment. We would go on long bike rides - riding from Mountain View up to SF, camping trips or riding our bikes to a bar, restaurant or movie showing. He was like the friend you had when you were a kid riding around on your bikes. I considered him a friend for life and not just one you have when you live in a place temporarily.

He will be missed. RIP Nick Shepherd
