Riding on cobblestones

You'd think that riding on cobblestones would be a bumby ride. It's not. It's more like a steady vibratory ride with mountain bike tires on the commuter. Tires would be the defining factor in riding comfort over a cobblestone path.

The tires I have currently are 26 x 2.1" Continental Traffic tires that have a tightly spaced knobby design with a semi-continuous center tread that gives a fast ride when pumped up to around 40 psi. There's a nice hum from the tires as the bike rolls across the cobblestones on the way to work. Surprisingly it's not a jarring ride.

Riding on cobblestones can loosen bolts on the bike over time. I found out this fact when my LED light engine mounted on my handlebar lost a bolt. Luckily Dinotte supplied some extra mounting hardware that it was easily replaced but not without a healthy dose of Loctite on all the nuts and bolts.

This past week, a creak had developed in the bottom bracket/crankset area that wasn't there before. Rode it for a day til I could get the bike back in the garage to have a looksee. The drive-side crank arm was loose and the fixing bolt needed tightening. I removed the crank arm, applied a liberal amount of grease on the ISIS bottom bracket/crank and re-installed. I didn't notice any creaking noises this morning so assume problem is fixed. We'll see if there's any noises this afternoon on the ride home.
